AVALON 41 CLUB

Avalon 41 Club were recently the guests of Avalon Round Table at their annual Christmas Party. This glamorous event took place at the equally glamorous venue of Baltonsborough Village Hall. The interior of the Hall was a sight to see; fine silks and fabrics covered the ceilings and walls, giving the impression of being in a Sheik’s tent, or a Hollywood movie set!
The assembled guests were attired in their finest Dinner Jackets and Posh Frocks, and sat down to an excellent 4 course dinner. The Kitchen and Waiting staff were efficient and friendly, and a credit to the Village Hall. Round Table had decided that this event should be a BYO (bring your own) evening, so a wide variety of intoxicating liquor was evident; a tribute to the ingenuity of Round Tablers and 41ers alike, that when it comes to drink, they have no equal! There was Beer, Lager, Red Wine, White Wine, Champagne and Whisky, but not, I hasten to add, all in the same glass! Even one or two exotic Liqueurs were spotted by the more sober amongst us.
A disco provided by Greig Nicholls and a colleague then proved beyond reasonable doubt that 41ers are not past it; several cast their Zimmers aside to trip the light fantastic for the rest of the evening…mind you, it was more of an exercise in enthusiasm than technique! Plenty of Dad Dancing. Even William got up and boogied….well, shuffled about a bit.
All in all it was a very enjoyable evening, and 41 Club would like to thank Round Table for the opportunity of attending this glittering event. Roll on next year!
Bob Smith
President Avalon 41 Club.

AVALON 41 CLUB

Our meeting for October was a dinner at Wells Golf Club. Some 20 members braved the wind and rain to attend a very convivial and pleasant evening. The meal was held in most comfortable surroundings, where a superb Fillet Steak was enjoyed by all.

This month we were very pleased to welcome some guests from Avalon Round Table, (the Mother Club of many 41ers) including their Chairman Tobi Bijkerk. For a change, they were very restrained and quiet; this was probably out of respect for the elder statesmen gathered about them.

On the other hand, it could have been because some of them, including a well respected local Bank Manager, were still recovering from a recent trip to Brussels . One of our normally more boisterous members, Ian Jose, regaled us with tales of some of their exploits whilst in Belgium . Several of the intrepid travellers were wearing small lapel badges of the Mannequin Pis as a reminder of what was probably a very "sober" trip!

The evening continued with many hilarious jokes, told in the style (and accent) of Jethro, by Chris Durston, who should probably have known better.

Altogether a very enjoyable evening; we look forward to our next meeting on Thursday 18 th November, for Dinner at the Pipers Inn, Ashcott.all ex Tablers are very welcome, and further info can be obtained from President Bob Smith on 07714 208108.

The Jolly Boys Outing for September, was a visit to Bowlplex Ten Pin Bowling in Yeovil.

There was a smaller than usual turnout, but we were determined to have a good evening. The competition commenced with us dividing into 2 teams of 4, each team determined to give the other a good thrashing (metaphorically).

All went well, with Min Forsey "undertaking" to beat the rest, but he was a little "stiff" to start with. However, after a small "coffin" fit, he managed to get into his stride, and quite a stride it is! Unfortunately, William Berry was not up to his usual standard. Dear oh dear.William seemed to think that his highly polished skittles technique would be ideal for Ten Pin Bowling; unfortunately, ending up on one knee with both hands palm down on the floor, whilst the ball skittered away down the gutter, was, I'm sure, not quite what Willy had in mind! It might work a treat at the Frog & Nightgown, William, but not in the All American Game. I'm afraid. Things then went from bad to worse, when William decided that he would play someone else's turn as well as his own! This didn't go down too well with Pete "Strike" Cabble.

Your correspondent thought that he was on to win the sweepstake for the highest score, but with scant regard for the fact that I'm President, Min Forsey swept past me in the last frame, to win by 6 pins (cheek)

After the exertions of the game, 41ers decamped to the nearby Pizza Hut, for a very enjoyable.er..pizza.

William had a bit of a surprise on his return from 'washing his hands', when he found 3 helium balloons tied to his chair, with a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday" being sung by all. (We told the waitress it was his 79 th birthday)

Everyone agreed that it was a most enjoyable evening, even if the result was unfair and lacking in respect for the office of President. Never mind, next month's meeting is Dinner at Wells Golf Club, so everyone can buy me a drink instead!!

Bob Smith, President Avalon 41 Club.

AVALON 41 CLUB

For their August get together, Avalon 41 Club embarked on a Treasure Hunt. This adventure started in the Southside Car Park in Street, and took in many sites of local interest and beauty. The devious and cunningly constructed route took participants through the back lanes of Butleigh Wooton, Compton Dundon and the Ancient Town of Royal Wessex, Somerton.. There, people were required to leave the security of their cars, to search for answers to various clues that were straightforward or downright silly.

The parties involved then took off towards Langport, but turned off in the direction of High Ham. There, they investigated several clues that included references to Don Corleone, the Black Hand Gang and Barrell Organs!

After descending from this lofty spot, the by now, weary and fed up travellers wound their way across the edge of the Levels, muttering about what sort of person would devise such a silly way to pass an otherwise pleasant evening!

After struggling up the steep side of Pedwell, they eventually arrived at journey's end, the Pipers Inn at Ashcott, only to find that the agony was not yet over..there was a Tiebreaker Quiz of 20 questions awaiting them. How sad the mind that could come up with questions ranging from Chimpanzees to the Titanic, via Alexander the Great's Horse!

Nevertheless, these stout souls persevered and the winners, William & Hugh Berry, were eventually rewarded with a bottle of the finest Wine. The losers, who shall remain nameless for fear of damaging their standing in the community, were rewarded with a can of Coke & a road map of Somerset !

Excellent meals and drinks were provided by Mine Host, Steve Chinnock (an ex Round Tabler himself) and a very sociable and pleasant evening was had by all...except Trevor Holman who moaned about not winning.

AVALON 41 CLUB

At their recent Annual General Meeting, Avalon 41 Club chose their new President for the forthcoming year. This turned out to be Bob Smith. Despite several times politely declining this great honor, and at one point seriously considering locking himself in the toilet, he graciously accepted the high office. After lowering his athletic frame into the seat of power, Bob then awarded the outgoing President, Ken Ellis, his Past President's jewel; then, muttering something about being "stitched up" he thanked everyone present for their support and confidence in his undoubted authority.

People sometimes ask "What is 41 Club" (not often, but sometimes)

41 Club is the Association of Ex Tablers' Clubs. As some people may know, Round Table had a policy of chucking their members out at the age of 40, ostensibly to maintain a "youthful and vibrant organization". (How successful this policy is can be debatable after some alcoholic and over indulgent evenings!) This is where the name 41 Club originates, although the age rule has now been extended to 45.

41 Club meet monthly, usually on the 3 rd Thursday of the month. The meetings are simply about Fellowship, conviviality and having an enjoyable evening. It can be a meal at a local Pub or Restaurant, an evenings Mackerel Fishing at Lyme Regis, or sometimes a visit to a place of interest, such as a local Cheese Maker or a small independent Brewery!

Meetings are open to any past member of ANY Round Table anywhere, not just locals. We currently have a healthy membership of around 36, but we are ever mindful of the need to keep our members up, so to speak. Therefore, if you have moved to this area from elsewhere in the UK, or if you are a past member of a Round Table in Mid Somerset and would like to renew old friendships and make many new ones, then give Bob Smith a ring on 07966 773526 for details of meeting dates etc: If that doesn't put you off, then you may even decide to come and join us.

You will not be expected to do anything or be anything: the only rule is that you will be expected to have a thoroughly pleasant evening.

AVALON 41 CLUB

Some of the more hardy members of Avalon 41 Club recently took a trip to Lyme Regis for a spot of mackerel fishing. The weather was rather windy on the appointed evening, and the sea a little choppy, causing some to voice concern about the likelihood of seeing their afternoon tea for the second time that day! However, 41 Club doesn't accept wimps as members, and all was well, with no unpleasant distractions on the voyage.

After only 10 minutes or so in the Skylark, the sea became much calmer, so hunting the wily mackerel commenced. William Berry wore his best Sea Boots (wellies), and began pulling the fish in as if they were going out of fashion! So much so, that he had to apologize to the others for the fish preferring his hook to anyone else's. The outcome of the evening's expedition was a catch of some 94 mackerel, causing concern amongst the more environmentally concerned about the impact on Lyme Regis fish stocks! Nevertheless, all concerns were put aside when the group adjourned to the local pub for some well earned (liquid) refreshments. A very pleasant and successful time was had by all.

Avalon 41 Club's next outing will be on Thursday 22 nd July, when they will visit the Bristol Railway Simulator for an evening spent indulging boyhood dreams of being an Engine Driver. The theme will continue with Dinner in the converted railway carriage restaurant of the Old Station Inn at Hallatrow.

Any past members of Round Table (or current members of RT between 40 & 45) are welcome to join 41 Club, and further details are available from Bob Smith on 07966 773526.

Bob Smith President.
