Tangent SW Regional Lunch
A great day in Exeter for the SWRL organised by Exeter Tangent. A little bit daunting - 181 ladies and me (and MC Mike Selley). Photo of both NPs with some of Newton Abbot Tangent.

Farnham 41 Club/Tangent

Having driven to Farnham and disturbed Janis' next door neighbours (SatNav isn't that accurate), Mary and I had a really enjoyable evening at this very rare 'Joint' Meeting. The guest speaker, a 90+ gardener from RHS Wisley, was a delight.

Region 25 Golf Day
|
|
| 19th September, West Malling Golf Club, the venue for the first ever Region 25 Golf Day. Very ably organised by David Campbell. Photos were taken of me with every team as they finished to be sure that we had a picture of the winners. Guess who were the last team in, when it was too dark for photographs? Yes, you're right - the winners!! ^ Back to TOP ^ |

| As is their tradition, Newton Abbot 41 Club invited the National Vice President to their Annual Charter Dinner on 21st September. (Gives him something to do during the year and is good practice for what is to come - so they tell me..!!)

Turriff Scottish Golf Championships
|
|
Thursday 6th September from Banff to Turriff for the Scottish Golf Championships. My first time on a golf course and the first time I had touched a golf club (to the total amazement and disbelief of the golf obsessed Scots!) The whole day was superbly organised by George Manson and Turriff 41 Club. The shaky pictures (I think the photographer had the DTs) are of the prizes and two of the winners.

The farthest north yet! To Banff on 5th September to present the Charter to Deveron 41 Club. Ably supported by VP Drew, Secretary Vaughan and new National Councillor Allan. Picture shows Chairman Mike Pitman receiving the Charter.

Newton Abbot Tangent
August was supposed to be a quiet month, but one of Mary's Tangents decided to change that. On 16th August I was invited to be guest speaker at Newton Abbot Tangent Club's 30th Charter. I used to think that the worst audience was a Round Table with policemen in it. I now think that it's a Tangent with my wife in it!!!

Brixham August meeting
I had moaned at a Torbay Conference Committee meeting that not one club in my own region had invited me to visit. This inspired our Golf Convenor Chris Morton to get his club, Brixham to invite me to their August meeting. The resulting cod and chips on Brixham seafront were excellent.

'Kick Asthma' Holiday
Mary & I visited one of this year's 'Kick Asthma' Holidays in Banbury. If I had ever had any doubts that I had chosen the right charity, they would have been dispelled on this day. The kids and the helpers were terrific and we both learnt a great deal about asthma that we never knew before. As a 'late onset asthma' sufferer, I came away with a much better understanding of how the illness affects young people. ^ Back to TOP ^

Sutton Coldfield Sports Night.

Sutton Coldfield's Annual Sports Night was well attended by 41ers from many local clubs. An evening of putting, quoits, bowls and darts was complemented by an 'indoor' barbecue, prize giving and draw. The overall winner was Past President Iain Kelso from Stratford upon Avon.
The draw raised £200 for Asthma UK. ^ Back to TOP ^

41 Club Garden - National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffs.
Whilst staying with Gordon and Elaine Macnab for the Sutton Coldfield Sports Night I visited the 41 Club Garden. The garden was looking good despite having been well under water in the previous week's floods. In the adjoining garden shelter there is a poster explaining 41 Club which is dedicated to Past President Malcolm Banks. Congratulations to Lichfield 41 Club for your continuing hard work there.

| June National Council Meeting. |
A bulk container of gin and Steve Bolter (spot the difference) |
The weather threatened to be the only low point in the weekend and even that turned out fine (for us, if not for the rest of the UK). Two productive and good humoured meetings were interspersed with excellent meals and a very 'interesting' tour of the Plymouth Gin distillery. The draw at the joint National Council/Plymouth 41 Club Dinner raised over £650 for Asthma UK. ^ Back to TOP ^ |

| A hectic dash to Milan and back, including a 0530 depature and an 0330 return(!), resulted in some productive contacts with 41ers in Europe. The first ever visit of a GB&I President to Italy's AGM was the cause of much celebration. It also gave me the chance of a long and amicable conversation with the French President and IPP. ^ Back to TOP ^ |

Thursday 10th May saw the 1st Charter Dinner of Calpe 41. (It's not a club for reasons connected with Spanish charity laws.) We stayed for two nights with last year's Chairman Andy Johnson and his wife Kathy and were made very welcome. Having left a hot sunny Alicante at 33°C, the arrival in cold, dark Exeter with the rain pouring down was quite a shock ^ Back to TOP ^

Troon 41 Club 30th Charter - 27th April 2007

|
| My first trip to Scotland as President was to attend Troon 41 Club's 30th Charter. A superbly well organised event at the famous Royal Troon Golf Club. Some food for thought for organisers of future events was that there was no 'top table'. All the guests were scattered about the room on tables of six. This meant there was an opportunity for visitors to really get to know some of the members and a chance for the membership to button-hole some of the exec. It worked really well and I heartily recommend it. ^ Back to TOP ^ |
Plymouth AGM
My first visit as President was, sadly, my attendance at the funeral of Past National President Tony Ashton in Chichester on Monday 16th April. My driver, Paul Haarer and I represented 41 Club and John Handley flew the flag for Round Table. Returning from Chichester, I had an hour's break - time for a shave and a cup of tea - before being whisked off to Plymouth by Mark Fairchild for Plymouth 41 Club's AGM. An excellent night with a very efficient meeting. Picture shows me presenting the first of my banners to incoming Chairman, Steve Murphy. ^ Back to TOP ^
