Our base for the weekend will be ‘Inn on the Lake’, Shorne (www.innonlake.co.uk). It is set in its own grounds with natural lakes just off the A2 with Shorne Country Park behind.
Saturday morning we travel on country roads along the North Downs with panoramic views of the Kent countryside, through small villages with cricket grounds, windmills, oast houses and hop fields. Crossing the River Medway, we will stop at Aylesford Priory, where, in 1242, a group of hermits from Mount Carmel were given land to establish a community by a crusader returning from the Holy Land. (www.thefriars.org.uk) Continuing to Kent Life which is an outside museum of Kent buildings (www.kentlife.org.uk). Both places have catering facilities.

In the afternoon we continue through the picturesque countryside and rural villages before returning to the hotel.
On Sunday we will be doing a Dickens tour finishing in Rochester. We will travel on country lanes along the Saxon Shore Way visiting the area which was featured in many of Charles Dickens’s novels including the graves at Cooling which was the setting for Great Expectations. Visiting a bird sanctuary, one of Europe’s major migration sites, which over 300,000 birds use with panoramic views over the marshes and the River Thames. We finish in the historic City of Rochester with its Castle and Cathedral which is the second oldest in England.

We have arranged with the hotel for an extra night for those who wish to visit other parts of Kent. The hotel is about 50 miles from Dover for the ferry or Folkestone for Eurotunnel. Also, Ebbsfleet is about 15 minutes from the hotel where members can take a day trip via Eurostar which has trains to Paris, Brussels or Lille.
